timming light

Hi all, when tuning your car if it is an old one are you still supposed to use a timming light or just tune it by ear ( on the car reaching it's best sound when rotating the distributer) my friend helped me tune mine wen I couldn't get it sorted, and he just tuned it by ear and it seams to run fine. So should a timming light still be used on the old cars or not?

you should always use a timing light in my opinion. Unless you think you are that good, that you can time by ear.
