I had an 84 733i and had to replace the camshaft. I was told that they were "soft" and wore out quickly. I had a Shrick (spelling ?) cam installed, wow the difference was amazing!

Besides what Dan said, the M30 is notorious for its valve tap...though I have to say its much quieter than my M20 was (with 60,000 more miles on the m20 too).

Don't make them too tight... You'll burn up the valves...

knew camshaft, huh? well if i do so i might get a rally cam or maybe wait to buy a better 533 or 535. i like the e28 body style more than the others though. thanks again guys.
ps maybe i'll try a tight .010

I would say go no further than +/- .002 of spec, even if the cams are worn down. Look in to it, the e34 535i cams might be an upgrade (as they are to the e28 535i, too)
