wats the memo function on the instrument panel for???

hey guys ne idea wat the memo button is for on the instrument panel???ive got a 318 IS 96 model (E36) .... havent been able to figure out wat dis memo button is for...although wen i activate it , it usually beeps after about 10 mins or so....ne info will be highly appreciated!!

Chime to let you know the hourly news is coming on the radio if I remember. I never use it.

it beeps 3 times 20 seconds before each hour to let u know the news are coming like carcus said but u are able to change this timing by pressing the memo button for more than 5 seconds.
