Window Rattle when closing doors

Sounds like my window is loose when rolled down and I shut the door - The glass sounds like it rattles - Odd enough - both sides do it...

Anyone else have this - Or should I be setting up a service call?

As there is no frame on the window..i throught this might be a small side effect...but as this is a BMW - I would expect it to be a solid "Thunk" when closing doors

I have not heard of this issue, check the window channel and make sure it is not worn out or the window had not come out of it. It should be some felt looking material.

same problem here touring e46

i have the same problem....windows down or partially down, shut the door and they sound loose...both at the front (back doors shut with a nice thud) drives me mad on an expensive car albeit 2001.

possibilities as far as i can tell could be:-

the retaining clips that hold the glass are worn
the channels that the window slide in are worn
something like a cable is moving

i took the panel off and can see nothing obviously wrong
why would this happen to both windows i wonder?

have you made any discoveries yet?

Still perplexed -- Took in to shop and we too pulled off panel...nothing seems out of ordinary.

My '02 300Ci did similar- just not as bad - I am going to get a 2nd opinion from another dealer - will keep you posted

thinking aloud

logic dictates that the same event must have happened to both windows. Although that could mean wear, it seems less likely. What occurs to me (and I did read something similar somewhere too) is that the previous owner was fond of slamming the doors and loosened the glass retaining clips! i've also read (TIS) that these must be replaced if taken off at any time for any reason. This would suggest that they are fragile. There is a small amount of lateral movement in the window, but it doesn't seem to stem from here though...still mystified! [?|] [???1]

Look forward to hearing your 2nd dealer's news. [scratch]

2nd Dealer - What a toolbox the guy was at this place - Anyway, from what they said they see this all the time and its just the way it is if you shut the door with the window down b/c of the way the window sits in the track (yeah right).

Jury is still out - going to pull door apart again.

When you pull the door panel out again, keep the window at the point it rattles most and try to shake it with your hands. See what moves and there you have the problem.

That sucks, my 15 year old shitbox sounds like closing a
swiss bank vault when you close the doors.
LOL.

Never liked the sound of the door closing on my 2003 330ci. It always made a cheap sounding 'clunk' even before driven off the dealer lot when new.

My passenger window has this same noise problem . It makes a scraping sound when raising/lowering the window and sounds like the glass is going to shatter if the door closes harder than normal.

Took it into the dealer today, hope they can fix it...

partial solution

i put some (quite a lot actually) black electricians plastic tape in roughly folded 6inch strips as padding (hidden of course) between the metal of the window frame and the rubber channels in order to squeeze the gap in which the window slides a little. this helps when the window is almost closed, but of course not when the window is wide open and the door is then shut.

so what do the dealers do?

Dealer fixed the scraping/rattling passenger window today.

The dealer worksheet says:

Replaced missing regulator nuts. Adjust window.

Part #: 41-62-7-051-459
Part Description: Hex Nut
Quantity: 5

So far, it's quiet, and goes up/down smoothly.

and another thing.....why do the front windows drop one centimeter when the doors are open? its a touring not a convertible so its not to seal because there is no upper frame. i find it hard to believe it has anything to do with pressure equalisation...if this was the case why not the back windows too? seems most likely that it is to provide a good air seal and make motorway driving less noisy. i suppose the seal could be broken when the doors are shut so by ensuring they are raised after shutting an airtight seal is ensured? a definitive answer would be much appreciated.

I thought with a convert the windows lower so they can rise up into the groove of the top. Meaning, not to eaquilize the pressure but to properly seal the cabin. Which as you said, doesn't make any sense in a sedan. I know this is not a definite answer but maybe your car has a software glitch? I hope you get it worked out.

Is a "tourer" a 2-door, or a 4-door?

The coupe (2-door) lowers the window, because thw window
slides under the window frame (which is part of the roof) when
the door is closed.

If it's a 4-door, aren't the window frames attached to the doors?
