Windows / Fuse Question

I have a 92' 325i Sedan.

Every so often the power windows freeze up. It's gotten to the point where they freeze up for months on end and will maybe work for one day and then they'll freeze up again.

On one such day my wife rolled down the windows and they froze. It's been over two weeks and the windows show no sign of rolling up.

I've been told this is a "fuse problem" by a couple of people. I checked all of the fuses in the box under the hood and even replaced them all just to be sure. However, this did not help.

I can tell the buttons for the Windows aren't properly receiving power because none of the Orange Up / Down arrows are ever lit.

Is there a second fuse box inside the car? If so please be very specific in helping me locate it since I no longer have the owner's manual.

If anyone has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

Check you circuit breaker switch. Its under the steering wheel on the right hand side. The switch could be bad. I had the same problem about 2 yrs ago. What I did was to eliminate the hot wire that goes into the switch and I used another hot wire thats under the speedometer.

Hope that help!!!

That does seem a reasonable idea. I have pressed the circuit breaker a few times in the past and it has worked. It all seems to be non-responsive now.

Is there even a second fuse box inside the car or only the one under the hood?

could you not run a hot wire from a power point to the switch to see if it,s working if so then just as the last fellow said run a hot wire from another point but remember to fuse this first.

I have the same car and I had dusty switches [:0] The front windows always worked but the back ones would only work every so often, sometimes not for a very long time. I tested all the wires with a voltometer and then I used an external DC power supply to test the switches and found them to be faulty. I got some compressed air and blasted both of them a real lot and cleaned all the contacts and now they always work :)

well, the problem seemed to be a transistor ($25 part).

kind of random.

now the windows work, but the window console around the shifter still looks like it's not getting adequate power (none of the orange arrows, etc.. are lit)

thanks for all of your help.

Never took the window switches out of the console, but imagine they have a bulb to illuminate the switch. Wish I had a good manual on the E36 that is cheap and listed a nice wiring diagram. MY window problem is common with alot of other E36, click the one touch button, will go back down sometimes a bit. I just deal with it and call it a quirk. My headlight switch is not illuminated, I need a new one off Ebay, plus at night my shift gears on the automatic, they are burnt out. The illuminated line works, just have not got around to taking it apart yet. Anyone else have these problems?[???1]
