Yet another question/problem (banging noise)

Hey guys, I have noticed that there is this banging noise coming from my right rear wheel. I thought it was the bearing on the axle since that is what usually causes that noise. The faster I got, the louder and more frequent the noise becomes. Today I lifted the rear right side of the car and tried shaking the wheel (someone told me that is how I check if the bearing is bad) but it stood without moving in any direction at all! I rotated the wheel and noticed that there is this screetching (not really, but sound like something is robbing against something else) noise that comes in a certain place and becomes stronger at one point and then goes away and all over again. It feels like the rotors are bad (I know they are because of the vibration when braking) but I'm getting it fixed (replacing the pads too) as soon as I get the insurance card so I can go through inspection the same day. Does anyone have any idea if the vibration and the banging noise is the "warped" rotor? I wish it is because it would solve the problem without extra money. Any ideas at all? Thanks in advance, you've been really helpfull.

the rotor sounds pretty much to be a good reason. as you said they are down and bad and that of course can create a noise like that.

back to the bearing, the wheels don't not have to move when the bearing is gone only a bit. then, you just don't have enough power to get it moving but the weight of the car and the physical forces of driving do. only when the bearing is really gone you can feel the wheel sitting loose - or less tight [:D] - on the axle.

anyway, you will ahve to replace the rotor, that means the guy has to take all the stuff off. have him check the bearing. the moment is good.

good luck with it.

That's why I'm waiting for my insurance card to arrive, so I can do inspection, the rotors, the pads and check the bearing at the same time. Do you think I have to replace the rotors? I know they need to be fixed and I know wjat's the problem with them and the shop I'm going to can "shave off" the bad part of the rotor for $10 and it becomes perfectly even again. They have a special machine for that and did that to my dad's rotors and it turned out to be good althought he didn't have any noise when driving only vibration under heavy braking. I guess the mechanic will just have to take a look and tell me if the only way is to change them. BTW do you know if it's possible to replace the bearing without replacing the whole axle? Thanks a ton Wadula.

if you can shave some material off depends on the overall thickness of the rotor. if it is already pretty much worn down, i would recommend new ones but the shop should notice that anyway. in case you can get them fixed that way, you are just fine.

for the bearings, you do not need a new axle. it is just a part that will be replaced. sometimes, depending on age and mileage of a car, you can get it fixed by tightening the nut some more (that is at least how i did it with my VW and it worked just fine)
i don't know how much time it will take to replace that part, so have them give you an estimate before you agree to get it changed.

What nut are you talking about? Isn't it only on the front wheels (the one that you tighten to find the right spot so the wheels stay in one place and rotate)? Or are you talking about the wheel nuts? Let me explain the problem clearer, I can feel the rear right wheel vibrating and there is noise coming from it, the faster I go the more vibration there is and the louder the noise gets. I wish it's the rotor but I'm not sure. So you're saying that the bearing can be replaced without the axle, right? That makes me feel a little better. Does it take a really long time and what needs to be taken off? I know that everything up to and including the rotor, this will be taken off anyway when the rotor "shaving" will be done, but what else needs to be removed (the axle maybe). Thanks for all your help, I got so scared when I noticed the problem. BTW can it be affected by the probably unbalanced front left wheel (there is no weight on it). Thanks again.

I went to the mechanic and he said it's the tires (he showed it to me and I saw the problem) and the rear right rim is bent a little. They checked the bearings and they are fine. I already ordered the tires, they'll be here on wednesday, so I guess I'll see what happens. BTW Does anyone know where can I get 1 BMW original rim without tires and about how much would it cost? Thanks in advance.
