I mean come on.....if it makes the car that bad....and since RJC has owned soooo mannny cars......TAKE IT BACK! Get an Aston Martin(oh wait a minute they have electrical problems too....) or a [fake] Mercedes Benz...(oh wait they have electrical problems too...) or what was it? A Lexus(oh wait they have electrical problems too!) Do we see a pattern here? Bottom line is that No car is perfect....even the M3 [pray] (said with reverence and with a little tear in his eye..)
and "minor" things that most people dont notice or even complain about are going to be present.

p.s. An alternate solution: add a second battery???

I was under the impression this forum was a platform to discuss various topics relating to BMW's. Guess I was wrong. Apparently someone like adrian8j finds it difficult to carry on an intelligent conversation without insulting people. This usually emanates from a person trying to cover his lack of same--probably caused by, in his words, being bred all over the world.
Auto manufacturers must love it when people find a problem and take the-so what-every car maker has problems attitude.
Sorry I ever posted anything on this forum. This will be my last reply. Last time I'll read anything here so have a ball adrian8j. You can now go insult other people who will read your replies.

i actually can't comprehend why anyone would leave the car keys in ignition when parking the car in the garage. if taking it inside w/ you is such a problem. why not take it out of the ignition and leave it in the center console?

i don't want to insult you, but when i was reading your complain, i couldn't stop laughing. but then i kept on reading and found that it's been your habit for 24 years, and 16 cars, so how can i argue w/ that?

however, this really isn't one of those typical: my $57000 car shouldn't:" rants imo.
adrian8j: i think you pissed off a very self respectable man. shame on you [:p]

in the event that you open and close your trunk or one of your back doors, couldn't you simply open then close your driver's door afterwards? doesn't seem like it would be all that much af an inconvenience. Then again my time might not be worth quite as much as yours.... I can't afford 57000 dollar cars.

I have been on this board for a while and have never really insulted anyone or really got under their skin.....like I said before "boojie". People like that probably need to come off their high horse and spend a day with the little people. Like I said before and others who also posted said......TAKE THE DAMN KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION!!!! JEEEEEEZZZZ! HOW MUCH OF AN IDIOT DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO NOT SEE THAT??? Not a typical rant but whenever someone makes a valid and IMHO "gentle" rebuke dont get all defensive about it!.....What I cannot understand is why he "had a dead battery more than once"!!! Wouldnt you have learned you lesson by now? Jeez man grow some brains! No I take that back as you are a relatively smart man because you bought the bimmer.......grow some more COMMON SENSE! You want a real complaint???? How about my doggone pixels going out on my Board Computer display!(I know about the whole class-action lawsuit already[thumb]).

p.s. Oh by the way RJC I know you said that was your last post but if you read this.....NOW I am insulting you.......PM me! [spank]

Hey adrean8j--calm down-take some valium.
It sure looks like RJC was correct in calling you insulting. He already posted he will have to take the keys out, but you don't stop. I don't blame the guy for quitting this site.
It seems like you're the one with the know-it-all and holier-than-thou attitude.
Get a life.

Blah, Blah, Blah

Blah, Blah, Blah I say....

So - I have the same issue with both my 2005 530's (see gallery section for pix!) Albeit I don't find it a problem.

I too park both vehicles in my garage with the keys IN the ignitions - turned in the "off" position of course. I drive the 5-ers on weekends only therefore they sit with the keys in the ignition for up to 6 days sometimes and never a problem when I go to drive them.

However, I did discover when I went to the garage to.... you know sit in the car naked or otherwise be "at one" with the cars, the parking lamps did come on when accessing the passenger compartment or boot. I discovered this only happens when I left the lamp switch in the "auto" mode position - I figured this occurrence to be nothing more than some sort of courtesy feature and/or safety lighting.

My fix = turn the lamp switch to the "OFF" position before exiting.

Alright then, carry on - Cheers for now!

Yeah I know what it looks like but I am not confrontational I tell you!!!! [fake]

Sorry to any who took that the wrong way...but it irritates me that someone considers it a "flaw"......it is a flaw if there is no way to fix it....obviously Doc found a way so he doesnt consider it a flaw...... [thumb]

While I agree that the right thing to do is take the keys out of the car, I'ld like to submit the following:

1. If you live in a gated community or property, with a locked garage, it's probably perfectly reasonable to leave the keys in the ignition in the garage.

2. I think it IS poor engineering on BMW's part to not turn the lights off after some extended period - say 30 minutes. The software geeks at BMW want to do everything else in software "because we can" (turn on wipers and headlights, iDrive, automatic climate control, windshild wiper parking angle, etc, etc.) so why not save someone's ass from running down the battery?

IF (Key in ignition) AND (key in off position) AND (trunk opened)
THEN (start Timer)

IF (timer done)
THEN (turn off lights)

someone else needs to calm down-take some valium.

btw, OP would never have to worry about that once the new keyless entry, keyless ignition system gets integrated. w/ just a push start btn, he wouldn't have any place to place the keys. brilliant!!

Wow, this thread took on a life of its own. Sometimes people misread the tone of people's posts. Our scribbles don't always capture the the facial expressions and nuance. I could read some of the posts above and take them different ways.

In any event, I don't think it's crazy to drive into your garage and leave your keys in the ignition. You then go to the rear seat to get your computer bag, briefcase, or jacket. For the rear lights and dash to light up and stay on all night is ridiculous...i don't wait for my interior lights to go out as a I walk away, only to find a dead battery in the morning. (That becomes no small problem when you can't start your damn $57k car.) This is a crazy lack of attention to detail.

They rushed this car out the door and tried to do too much too quickly in a body style change, IMHO.
