trade M3 in for M5??

I'm debating on what to do. my significant other has been bugging me to get a more practical car (4 doors). i'm debating on whether to keep my M3 or trade it in for an 02 or 03 M5. I'd still be getting similar performance and 4 doors - plus they kinda look like a big version of the M3. I'd like to know what people's thoughts are though. Anyone of you currently own or previously own a late model M5?

Well the E39 M5 is just downright sexy. Plus it has the significance of being a velvet-gloved iron fist!

Moreover, if you got an E39 M5 I have no doubt that you'd have the last great M5. The E60 looks like the start of the rot as far as drivers are concerned.

I would call you crazy, but I will also admit I dont like any of the new 5 series,

They just are not nice flowing lines as in the last 5 series.

Since this is only an opinion question, thought I would chime in.

Good Luck with whatever you do.

thanks for the suggestions. i agree, i don't particularly love the new 5 series.. i've driven a 545i sport 6 speed, drove exceptionally and the torque of a V8 is soooo sweet. i love my M3 and the more i drive her, the less i want to get rid of her but... the other woman in my life is all about being "practical"... took a little while for me to get her to agree that an M5 is that... funny story actually - kind of a bit of reverse psychology. my close friend / partner in crime just picked up a 911 carrera... extremely sweet ride and something i've always lusted after - my friend and i kept telling my girl how awesome the car is and that its something guys in general generally "just love". we kept pushing the issue that since he got one, i should be able to get one and even though its not that practical, i'd probably keep it for a couple of years THEN move to something more domestic... after about two weeks of this - talking up the 911's looking on the net, etc.... we were out driving in the M3 and came up to an M5 while in traffic... totally sweet - carbon black, black interior.. just like my car but 4 door (essentially). guy in the M5 looked over, gave the nod of approval and a thumbs up that i get quite frequently from other M-Car owners. my girl asked some questions about the M5, (how much, colors, does it have smg, blah blah blah) and oh yeah... she said it was "pretty".. had to laugh at that one... the M5 isn't pretty.. its a gorgeous piece of refined engineering taken to an almost ridiculous level (i did say almost..) and built to carry 5 passengers extremely comfortably at triple digit speeds... i don't think she understands.... well, her verdict on seeing an M5 was that it was the best of both worlds... four doors and more space for the family and not really stepping down for me with regard to performace, visuals and just the status of an M car. she suggested that i get "one of those" instead of the porsche.... who am i to argue??? so.... that being said.. i am on the prowl for an immaculate M5 and no issues about it from the woman.... isn't it great!

oh, forgot to mention to "flashinthepan" - checked out the pics of your M... absolutely beautiful... i love the rims too. one question, are your running lights xenons too? they look like HID's and different from mine.. I personally love the look of the HID's over halogens for the running lamps and fogs...

Thanks ! and I like the looks of your ride ! I just hate to see you have to let her go, but things happen & I understand fully.

As far as the lights go I just have the standard stockers - non-Xenons.

One other note, strictly just talking here, but I have grown to like the 4 door Mercedes Models, I see em' a lot and am thinking some day I may just roll into a Mercedes dealer and take a peek. Granted the M5 would be divine from a performance perspective, but Mercedes has grown on me. I see a luxury car down the road that may not replace the M3. (wifey)

Let us know, or post some pics if you make a move. In some ways I feel I am behind the 8-ball on Bangles designs...who knows in a few years I will be raving about them...lol !!

**EDIT - I appologize I didnt notice you were talking the 02-03 M5, I mistakenly assumed the new to be released M5, I do absolutey love the 02-03 M5 & the 540 for that matter....I am with you on this model [hah]

Wait. When you say significant other, do you mean wife or girlfriend.

Do you have any kids?

If you have kids, and she's your wife, I can see the change. Otherwise, I'd tell her to go piss up a rope [slap]

If you don't have kids, there isn't a reason to get a 4 door, IMO.

Hell, I have kids and I don't have a 4 door and WILL NOT have a 4 door. That's what the wife's car is for...hauling kids.

Having a 2 door gives me a reason not to have kids spilling drinks and getting candy stuck in my seats and stepping on my upholstery with muddy shoes. [nono]

Why is it "more practical" for you to have a 4 door?

The point I am making is relationships are about compromise...but a person shouldn't compromise the things that matter most to them...if they do, they should get some serious concessions (ie M5). If you really really love your car, and have no kids and she ain't your wife, then keep your M3 and tell HER to get a more practical car.

Just my two cents.

I have been debating the E46 M3 and E39 M5 as a replacement for my daily driver TL. Because I have the NSX for a weekend/track car, the M5 is a better choice for me. I also found the power of the M5 to be much more intoxicating than the M3. I am able to resist the M3, and I have driven a few, but one drive of the M5 and I was hooked. Now it is only a question of when, and what I will drive when it snows.

You just CANNOT go wrong with the M5! Such a beautiful car.

Braht did you end up finding that E28 M5 you've been looking for?

Bit the bullet but of a different sort

Well... I"m sure that this will disappoint M owners but I got rid of my girl.... (the M3).... sorry to say - but I am still with BMW. Ended up getting a used 03 745i. In ridiculously MINT condition. Black on tan, 19"s, logic 7 system (which is incredible by the way - better than the HK in the M!)
Its a unique step that I'm very happy with. to be honest... the car is phat! regal, sporty (not to the extent of an M but better than the other luxury cars by far).
Just picked it up so I'm eager to drive around a bit and tell the story later. its sweet though....

Sounds like you got a nice car. I love the 7's, they are roomy, big and have power. I am afraid that if I had the M5 I would not want the kids in the car because I would be driving like I was in a race...hey wait my kids are grown I could get an M5!

I have an E46 M3 conv. and I love it. I recently drove an 01 M5, and loved it. It was a monster and it felt like it had so much torque. It was also very confortable and felt like a luxury sedan. I say go for it.

the only negative argument, is the fact that the new model M5 is going to come out very soon and will hurt the resell value of your M5.

waiting for the rain to stop

I'm going to post some pics as soon as the weather permits. ever since i've gotten the new girl - our weather here in NJ has been back and forth between beautiful gorgeous days during the week and rainy, cold and gloomy on the weekends. go figure. i actually got a detail about a week after i got the car from my dealer - car looked great - then it rained the next day for about an hour - cleared up again and blah blah blah... its friday morning and overcast with rain expected later today. i was hoping to get the car all cleaned up for her photo shoot and take some good pics tomorrow. but, from what i've heard - it doesn't look like that's going to happen this weekend either..

I'm considering getting some rims and i saw these on cardomain - does anyone know who the manfacturer is on these? i've looked at a lot of sites and can't seem to find these particular ones. this is essentially my car except for the wheels - i've got the 19" oem "star spokes" - which i really like already and was considering leaving alone.. but take a look at the pic and let me know what everyone thinks.

Thanks-
