i think my car needs a tune-up! the question is should i just take it to a mechanic and pay like $500-$600 or do it myself. my friend says that it should be easy to do. what all has to be done/ changed?

ps. where (website) can i go to get the parts?

lets see

oil filter = 10
Oil = 3.50/qt synthetic
Air filter = 30.00
Spark Plugs = 4 - 6 each

for about 100.00 or so you can diy

get a good torque wrench (or find a friend with a good set of tools)

spend about 1-2 hours tinkering and save a few hundred... sounds sumple enough

but he said tune up not service. a service replaces fluids helping your baby run better a tune up gets it back in tune for which im afraid you need the computer.

actually... the tune up's generally consiste of

fluid changes, plugs, wires, etc.... if there were any codes thrown... then yes you would read them and address them at that point... why not go to an autozone and have them read the stored codes... and address them yourself?

While we are at it... why not post what services are to be completed for the 5-600 dollars...

I'll be willing to bet that they are going to be performing an inspection I or more than likely and Inspection II

1 - you can change the brake fluid by working a can or two through the existing system with a little help

2 - Change the Coolant
3 - Change the oil
4 - check the differential for leaks... or change that too
5 - change the spark plugs
6 - check the coil packs... or change them out, or just the wires
7 - address any code issues

Again... these ARE tune up items... If there is a code stored, fix it... don't need expensive machinery for that...

If you are talking about re-programming the DME for fuel, etc... then YES that is expensive... but not a tune up per se... that is a software upgrade

comrade1 - what services are they performing for you here?

My 91 318is with 130k is still running the original wires, and other "tuneup parts. The plugs have been changed once, and all the fluids are synthetic. "tuneup" today can mean about anything. Don't change it just because.

Oh I agree with you.... just interested in finding out what the quoted tune up is for...

My bet is for an inspection X they are performing... most of which can be a DIY ...even for a novice.... the only "tough" ones are the spark plugs... and that is not that hard

all the others are fluid changes...

At 130k ... might want to think about the wires though

i will be putting this on the dyno next week... I'll let ya know... without the chip (planning on the upgrade during the dyno) I should be somewhere 280+ at the crank (tak 15% off an that is a reasonable estimate of the RWH ~ 240 at the wheels) ... the chip should get me back to 250...255 at the Rear wheels...

hey guys, sorry for the delay!!!!

i personally didn't speak to the shop mech. but my friend did. he didn't remember exactly which inspection but he said it was like 6 hours of labor. does that ring a bell? i'm assuming that what i was quoted is not just a normal tune-up.

depending on the shop... sounds like and inspection 2... MOST of this can be a DIY...

most of this is check for leaks, check fluids, replace fluids, replace air filters, etc (like described in earlier posts) - MOST of this can be accomplished by a novice mechanic with access to a decent set of tools (torque wrench , jacks, stands, slider, left handed monkey wrenches, etc)

For a tune up specifically... change plugs, filters, change fluid systems (brake, coolant, oil, check differential or change if applicable) etc

You can spend 1-200 on the parts, buy some decent tools for 1-200 and have those tools to do it again in the future (oil, plugs, etc)

Pull the wheels, check brake pad thickness, etc good tools to have in a box IMHO

Imagine doing a FULL brake swap for about 300 for all NEW parts, etc... If you have a freind who has done SOME of these things before... buy them some beer (after the work) and make an afternoon out of iT
